Griffith City Council is offering a $5,000 reward for information that leads to the conviction of those responsible for vandalism attacks in the local government area.
The Council says it has seen a concerning rise in vandalism incidents in the past month, including damage to key public assets such as the recently refurbished Dave Taylor Park and the jetties at both North and South Lake Wyangan.
Among the most recent acts of vandalism include chairs being displaced at Dave Taylor Park, burnouts in the Lake Wyangan recreational area, the removal of signage, damage to a tap and a gate in City Park and significant damage to the jetties (pictured) at both North and South Lake Wyangan, the Council outlined in a statement.
Mayor, Doug Curran said the incidents highlight the need for community support to protect local spaces and ensure the safety of all residents and visitors.
“It’s disappointing that these acts divert valuable Council resources that could be better used elsewhere, ultimately increasing costs for ratepayers,” Mayor Curran said.
“Council suffers several incidents each month ranging from theft, to malicious damage and graffiti.
“The costs associated with these pointless acts are a continued burden on the community,” he said.
As Council begins installing Christmas decorations in Memorial Park, Mayor Curran is calling on residents to assist in safeguarding public spaces.
“We encourage anyone who witnesses vandalism to report it to Council or the Police,” he said.
“CCTV cameras are in place in some areas, but community vigilance is key to protecting our shared spaces and assets. These fools that perform the vandalism that adversely affects our community deserve to be caught and required to front the judicial system and I hope they have the book thrown at them.”
The Council is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the conviction of individuals responsible for vandalising Council property.
