Griffith City Council is encouraging residents to report suspicious behaviour and vandalism affecting community infrastructure after sections of security fencing at Griffith Regional Airport were damaged by vandals.
The Council said the fencing was recently installed to improve security around the airport precinct and help protect facilities used by passengers, visitors and the wider community.
“The damage highlights the importance of community vigilance and the role residents can play in helping protect public assets,” Council said in a statement.
The incident follows extensive vandalism at Dave Taylor Park, where infrastructure delivered in 2024 has been repeatedly targeted. Damage has included fencing, graffiti, smashed windows at the community centre and rubbish bins being deliberately set alight. Similar acts of vandalism have also occurred across other Council facilities and public spaces in recent years.
“While incidents may occur at different locations, the impact is the same. Public funds that could otherwise be directed towards facility improvements, upgrades and community services must instead be spent repairing preventable damage,” Council said.
“Every dollar spent rectifying vandalism is funding that cannot be invested in projects that benefit the broader community Council is asking residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious behaviour around community facilities, parks, sporting grounds, public buildings, airport infrastructure and other Council assets.
“Early reporting can assist authorities to investigate incidents and may help prevent further damage.”
The Council is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the conviction of individuals responsible for vandalising Council property. All information provided will be treated confidentially.
