Greater Geelong joins grove of world tree cities

The City of Greater Geelong has been officially recognised as a Tree City of the World by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation.

Mayor, Trent Sullivan said the City was proud to be one of only nine cities in the country to be recognised as a Tree City of the World.

“This solidifies our commitment to making Greater Geelong a greener place,” he said.

“As a community, it is wonderful to demonstrate our commitment to protecting and enhancing our green canopy and we celebrate this accolade.”

Chair of the Environment and Circular Economy portfolio, Councillor Peter Murrihy, applauded Council for being part of the program, which is an initiative of the United Nations and the Arbor Day Foundation, recognising cities committed to ensuring that their urban forests and trees are properly maintained, sustainably managed and celebrated.

“Being part of this select group of cities from around the world will allow us to share ideas and insights that will ensure we continue to see our trees and forests flourish,” said Cr Murrihy.

Greater Geelong’s tree canopy coverage is approximately 14% with a target of 25% to be in line with the Urban Forest Strategy 2015, he said.

“This target aligns with our Sustainability Framework Action Plan 2020–2022, Environment Strategy 2020-2030 and Clever and Creative community-led goals.”
