Goulburn cuts down local land clearing confusion

A new campaign that aims to raise awareness among the community about the importance of seeking appropriate approvals prior to clearing trees, grasses and other vegetation on rural and non-rural properties has been launched in Goulburn.

The ‘CALL BEFORE YOU CLEAR’ campaign is an initiative of Goulburn Mulwaree Council in collaboration with NSW Local Land Services (LLS) and the Biodiversity Conservation and Science Division of the NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment & Water (DCCEEW).

As part of the campaign, a quick reference guide has been produced, providing guidelines on when approval is required and who to contact for further information.

Although some exemptions may apply, approvals are typically required to clear vegetation, Council said in a statement. The new resource will be promoted through each of the collaborating agencies, ensuring widespread dissemination of vital information, it said.

All property owners within the GMC Local Government Area, along with a large number of
stakeholders will receive a copy of the ‘CALL BEFORE YOU CLEAR’ guide, and the document will also be available on Council’s website.

“The partnership between GMC, LLS and DCCEEW is planning to build upon the campaign with a Biodiversity Edition of the guide in the near future, which will contain information about ‘Clearing and Other Impacts to Threatened Biodiversity’ in the GMC Local Government Area,” Council said.

“Goulburn Mulwaree Council remains committed to preserving and protecting the region’s natural environment. By working in partnership with Local Land Services and the Biodiversity Conservation and Science Division of DCCEEW, Council aims to foster responsible land management practices and safeguard the biodiversity of the area.”
