Frankston street art scores hat-trick

Frankston’s famous Street Art Tours have made history by winning gold at the Australian
Street Art Awards for the third successive year.

The hat-trick has earned Frankston the honour of being inducted into the Australian Street Art Awards Hall of Fame.

Propelled by the Frankston’s annual Big Picture Fest, which took home the Silver Award for
Best Street Art Festival or Event at the Australian Street Art Awards, Frankston is home to more than 80 eye-catching murals by local, national and international artists.

The judges congratulated Frankston for investing in “inspired” guided walking tours to maximise return from their street art, adding: “We love that through the Big Picture Fest these guided tours are a constantly developing product with new elements each year, which helps drive return visitation and further enhances the benefits to your tourism market.

“And we also love that by adding new murals annually Frankston City Council is supporting the arts sector and aiding the evolution of the distinctive separate styles found within the street art world,” the judges said.

Mayor, Nathan Conroy said Frankston’s reputation as a hub for arts and culture was going from strength to strength.

“The Hall of Fame accolade speaks volumes for Frankston City Council’s groundbreaking public arts and destination events strategy. Locals and visitors tell us they love the Street Art Tours – guided by passionate locals – as they create a memorable and lasting experience to explore Frankston.”

Mayor Conroy said Frankston’s buildings and laneways will again be transformed in a celebration of the world’s most iconic street artists as part of the 2024 Big Picture Fest (18 to 24 March).

“The Big Picture Fest is one of Frankston’s most significant events bursting with colour, movement and music – this year featuring digital projections, exhibitions, miniature dioramas, and award-winning daytime and twilight tours create a truly immersive experience.”

The Street Art Tours were developed by Council in 2018 to create a tangible experience around the City’s street art and to encourage both residents and visitors to discover this emerging outdoor gallery. They are a highly rated attraction on Tripadvisor with the well-researched tours mixing art appreciation, storytelling and local history to showcase Frankston City as a trailblazer in the world of street art.
