Former Mayor appointed Tasmanian Local Government Minister

Former Mayor of Sorell, Kerry Vincent, has been appointed Tasmanian Minister for Local Government and Minister for Infrastructure.

In a statement, Tasmanian Premier, Jeremy Rockliff, announced Mr Vincent’s (pictured, right) appointment, saying the former Mayor had “played an instrumental role in the transformation of Sorell which has seen the construction and delivery of generational infrastructure for his constituents, in partnership with State and Federal Governments.

“Kerry will be a real driver of better outcomes for a number of key infrastructure projects across the State,” he said.

“Kerry has a wealth of experience in local government and fully understands the challenges and opportunities it faces.”

Mr Vincent said he was grateful to Premier Rockliff for the appointment.

“I’ll be doing everything I can to deliver the best outcomes for the people of Tasmania,” he said.

“I’m grateful to Premier Jeremy Rockliff for appointing me as Minister for Infrastructure and Minister for Local Government, two areas very close to my heart.”

The former Mayor’s appointment follows the departure of Minister Nic Street (pictured, left), who stepped down from the Cabinet on Friday.

“With a heavy heart, I today announced my decision to step down from the Tasmanian Government’s Cabinet,” Mr Street said in a statement.

“I have long been honest and open about my struggles with mental health and now is the time to focus on that.

“Following my return to work after taking leave earlier this year, I have now reflected on my long term future.

“This is probably the most selfish decision I’ve made in eight years but if I am to improve my wellbeing back to 100% it’s a decision I need to make, and I hope the people of Tasmania can understand that.”

Mr Street will stay on as the Member for Franklin.

Nic Street announces his departure from Cabinet on Friday.

“Nic Street is a great person with his heart in what he does in State Government,” said Mr Vincent.

“I wish him well and offer my full support as he concentrates on his mental health and his electorate.”
