City of Canada Bay Council has secured a $235,000 grant to run a trial food waste recovery program in the suburb of Rhodes.
The Organics Collections grant, funded by the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA), will allow the City of Canada Bay to run a Food Organics Garden Organics (FOGO) trial in Multi-Unit Dwellings in Rhodes.
“The project will begin later this year and provide residents in over 1,700 households a kitchen caddy to capture food waste and a food organics collection service, as well as educational materials for buildings available in various languages,” says City of Canada Bay Deputy Mayor, Stephanie Di Pasqua.
Council will also be undertaking waste audits and carrying out interventions and surveys as part of the trial, she said.
Diverting food waste from landfill is a key element of the City of Canada Bay’s Resource Recovery and Waste Strategy, and Council plans to roll out a food organics collection service City-wide in 2025.
“This trial in Rhodes will provide valuable learnings to inform the future implementation of FOGO services across the local government area,” says Cr Di Pasqua.
“It will also help us develop services that meet the needs of our community, particularly in high-density locations where food organics collection can be more challenging.”
The Organics Collections grants are delivered via a partnership between the EPA and the NSW Environmental Trust, and the City of Canada Bay is one of six councils to receive a share in $2.6 million through the program.
