The Australian Government is progressing plans for a new Residential Aged Care facility for Norfolk Island, with the project moving into its next phase.
In April, the Norfolk Island Regional Council approved the project’s Development Application, subject to conditions. Contractors are now finalising the required documentation to address these conditions.
The Federal Government thanked community members who provided feedback during the public exhibition period, which played an important role in supporting the development approvals process and ensuring local perspectives were considered.
Reeves International Pty Ltd – an experienced contractor in remote and regional infrastructure – has been working closely with NIHRACS and local health stakeholders to progress the design, ensuring the new facility reflects the needs of the Norfolk Island community and health care providers. The design has now reached the 50% schematic milestone.
As part of the Government’s oversight processes, the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Cities and Regional Development is working with its contractors to be ready for the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Works (PWC) to consider the project later this year. The PWC will review the proposal as part of its role in assessing major Australian Government infrastructure projects to ensure they represent both value for money and meet community need. The PWC process also provides additional opportunities for community engagement, allowing residents and stakeholders to share their views as the project progresses through parliamentary review.Â
The new facility will deliver 16 modern, fit-for-purpose aged care beds, along with improved mortuary, laundry and ancillary services that will strengthen the island’s broader health and aged care infrastructure. All works will be carried out in line with environmental, heritage and safety requirements.
