Edward River Council’s independent senior living project, Edward River Village, has been named as a finalist in the 2024 NSW Local Government Excellence Awards.
The Village is up for award consideration in the category of Asset and Infrastructure – Over $1.5 million – Population under 150,000.
The Council says the project is a visionary initiative that features 32 retirement homes designed to provide functionality, comfort, and independence for seniors.
Mayor, Peta Betts said the development, set against the backdrop of Edward River, aims to support seniors wishing to retire close to family and friends, within walking distance to Deniliquin’s cafes, restaurants, and services.
“Edward River Village is a testament to our commitment to enhancing the quality of life for our senior residents. This project not only provides much-needed housing options but also fosters a vibrant community where our seniors can lead active, rewarding lives,” she said.
The project aligns with Edward River Council’s Advocacy Strategy 2021, which prioritises retirement living as a key objective. The Council worked diligently with the NSW State Government to secure land and develop this essential facility. The Village offers maintenance-free living, home care services, and social amenities, promoting an active, healthy lifestyle for retirees.
Awards organiser, Local Government Professionals NSW, commended the project’s nomination.
“Congratulations to all at Edward River Council on being selected as a finalist. Your application was a pleasure to review and stood out to our selection committee amongst all the nominations in a highly competitive field.
Edward River Council collaborated with local and regional trades, awarding contracts to local companies Deni Civil Pty Ltd and B. Green Constructions Pty Ltd.
