Disaster assistance pledged for bushfire-hit towns

The Federal and Queensland Governments have pledged to support communities in Dirranbandi and Hebel in Queensland following this week’s bushfires.

Through jointly-funded Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA) support for council cleanup, evacuation, restoration of services and individuals is now available, the Governments today announced.

Balonne Shire Council will be supported with the costs of counter disaster operations including firefighting activities, incident management, the establishment of evacuation centres and for the reconstruction of essential public assets.

Personal Hardship Assistance is available for eligible residents, providing $180 for individuals and up to $900 for a family of five or more towards the costs of emergency food, clothing and medicine.

Federal Minister for Emergency Management, Jenny McAllister said the assistance would support affected communities to clean up and recover after this bushfire event.

“Joint support includes money for eligible residents to purchase food and clothing in the immediate aftermath of the fires, and to help homeowners reconnect their damaged properties,” Minister McAllister said.

“We’re committed to helping Dirranbandi and Hebel get back on their feet following these bushfires and will continue to work closely with the Crisafulli Government to do so.

“It has been an incredibly difficult time for Dirranbandi and Hebel residents, and I want to acknowledge the brave work of first responders and community members.”

Queensland Minister for Disaster Recovery, Ann Leahy said Balonne Shire’s response to the bushfires had been exceptional.

“From battling the blaze to establishing fire breaks and evacuating where necessary, the response in Dirranbandi and Hebel has been lifesaving and I thank all involved,” Ms Leahy said.

“Resilience is a hallmark of Queensland’s remote communities, however, we know this resolve can be tested in crisis situations.

“The assistance measures we’re announcing today are an important step in the recovery process, putting money in the pockets of eligible residents and ensuring council can focus on their response and recovery efforts.

“The Crisafulli and Albanese Governments will continue working closely to support everyone affected by these destructive fires.”
