The Northern Territory Government is asking Darwin residents and businesses to have their say on two design options for the city’s Smith Street Streetscape Project.
The Government has committed $3 million in Budget 2023 under the 10 year Darwin City Deal to position Darwin as a vibrant and liveable tropical city, with City of Darwin Council leading the consultation and delivery of the project.
The concept designs for the Smith Street Streetscape Project, which will take place on a section of Smith Street between Knuckey and Whitfield Streets, feature additional greening, improved pedestrian and active transport access and enhancements to amenities.
City of Darwin Lord Mayor, Kon Vatskalis said the designs aimed to create “a cool, green and dynamic pedestrian hub in the heart of the city centre”.
“The Smith Street Streetscape improvement is a further commitment towards a common vision between City of Darwin and the Northern Territory Government for Darwin’s future as a vibrant, liveable and tropical city,” said Lord Mayor Vatskalis.
“In addition to seeing more trees planted, the concept designs include the installation of micro mobility lanes, upgrades to infrastructure including additional pedestrian crossings, more street furniture and public art opportunities.
“Smith Street is a main hub of Darwin’s city centre and the go-to spot for locals and tourists to work, shop and socialise. I encourage everyone to have their say on the concept designs during the engagement process.”
Consultation will close at 4pm on Friday 28 June.
