Darebin City Council is mourning the loss of long-serving Councillor, Gaetano Greco, who has passed away following a battle with cancer, aged 65.
Cr Greco (pictured) was a Darebin City Councillor from 2008 to 2025 and also served as Mayor in 2013-2014.
“Throughout his long and dedicated career serving the people of Darebin, Cr Greco was a tireless advocate for social justice, community wellbeing, and inclusive governance,” the Council said in a statement.
“He was a driving force in active engagement and dialogue between cultures and fought for equity of community outcomes between the North and South of Darebin.
“Cr Greco always made time to listen and respond to requests or concerns from the community, and he championed decision making that was informed by community voices and views.
“Cr Greco’s leadership and vision is evident in his steering of Council’s agenda to support local businesses, save the Preston Market and support its ongoing viability, always guided by the views of his constituents.”
The Council expressed its gratitude for the “remarkable” legacy Cr Greco leaves in “making Darebin a better place”.
“Our thoughts and condolences are with his partner Susana and family and friends at this sad and difficult time,” it stated.
