City of Launceston Council has ordered the temporary closure of the city’s School of the Arts TAS after a building compliance inspection identified safety and compliance issues.
Council Chief Executive Officer, Sam Johnson said the decision was not taken lightly but was necessary to ensure the safety of children, young people and families using the venue at 86-96 Gleadow Street.
“Our officers inspected the building this week and found that it did not have the required permits or occupancy approvals in place,” Mr Johnson said.
“Some internal works had been undertaken without the necessary approvals and, as a result, important safety features like exit signage and fire systems are not currently in place.
“Until these matters are resolved, we can’t be confident the building is safe in the event of an emergency.”

Mr Johnson said Council was committed to working closely with the operator to support a safe reopening as soon as possible.
“We know this is difficult news for families and for the business, and we want to reassure the community that there is a clear pathway forward.
“The operator and their architect are already preparing plans and working with a licensed Building Surveyor to secure a Temporary Occupancy Permit.
“Once this is in place, the School of the Arts TAS will be able to welcome students back while the longer-term approvals are finalised.”
“Our priority is to make sure children and young people can learn and perform in a safe environment, and we will continue to support the business to get back on its feet as quickly as possible,” he said.
