Cumberland City Council has announced the upcoming rebuild of Granville Park, Merrylands, with construction set to commence in the middle of 2025.
The Council says the project will bring significant improvements to the park’s existing facilities, enhancing the overall experience for families and visitors in the community.
“Underpinned by its community vision ‘Welcome, Belong, Succeed’, and strategic planning for open space and recreation, Council is committed to ensuring that Cumberland is a great place to live and play. Council is promoting healthy and active lifestyles through a range of high-quality community facilities, public green spaces, and recreational services and activities, all aligned with community expectations, population growth, and intended uses,” the Council said in a statement.
The rebuild will feature a newly designed bigger and better water play area, providing an exciting and interactive splash park for children of all ages.
The splash park will be named the Laurie Ferguson Splash Park, retaining its name from the former Parramatta City Council, and honouring Laurie Ferguson, who served as the Member for Granville in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1984 to 1990.
In addition to the splash park, the playground will undergo a comprehensive revitalisation, incorporating new play elements designed to stimulate creativity, exploration, and physical activity. The project will also include the addition of new amenities, such as modern change facilities and toilets.
“Local playgrounds offer a free way to entertain children while providing a safe and enjoyable space for them to spend their free time close to home. They are one of the few free public spaces left where families can relax without the burden of cost-of-living pressures that are affecting our community right now,” said Cumberland Mayor, Ola Hamed.
“As part of our ongoing commitment to improving the quality of our local parks and recreational spaces, the rebuild of the Laurie Ferguson Splash Park will provide even more opportunities for the community to come together, engage in outdoor activities, and enjoy a more inclusive, active lifestyle. I can’t wait to see everyone making the most of these massive improvements!”
