Council backs Port Fairy pool closure decision

Moyne Shire Council has supported Belfast Aquatic’s decision to voluntarily close the Port Fairy pool and fitness centre, following the discovery of mould and algae in the facility.

The Council recently commissioned a number of expert reports regarding the condition of the facility, with subsequent reports identifying the presence of mould throughout the facility and algae in some parts.

“As a result of this discovery, following a period of investigation and consultation, Belfast Aquatics has agreed to close the facility whilst further testing and remediation works are undertaken,” Council said in a statement.

The decision was taken following discussions with the Barwon South West Public Health Unit, Council’s Environmental Health Officers, various external expert opinion and Belfast Aquatics.

“All parties have had to closely balance the benefit of the facility to the community against the priority of ensuring the health and wellbeing of the community is protected, and ultimately it was determined that closure is required,” the Council said.

Any concerned community members should refer to the Better Health Channel Resources provided by the Department of Health and attend their GP with any specific health concerns, it stated.
