Cooee Bay aquatic centre to be named after local sporting identity

Mr Dorey was named Livingstone Shire Council Citizen of the Year in 2019.

Livingstone Shire Council has formally endorsed the naming of the new Cooee Bay Aquatic Centre after a local sporting pioneer.

A meeting motion, submitted by Recreation and Culture Committee Co-Chair Councillor Andrea Friend, sought to honour the late Brian Dorey OAM in recognition of his outstanding contributions to local sport and recreation across the Capricorn Coast.

The proposal was strongly supported by a community petition initiated by the Member for Keppel, Nigel Hutton, with approximately 220 signatories calling for the facility to be named the Capricorn Coast Brian Dorey OAM Aquatic Centre.

Mayor, Adam Belot acknowledged the community’s advocacy and said the naming decision reflected both the scale of the project and the legacy of an individual who had made a lasting impact on the region – bringing history into our future.

“Council recognises the deep respect and admiration held for Brian Dorey, whose tireless service to community sport continues to benefit generations,” Mayor Belot said.

“Naming the facility the Capricorn Coast Brian Dorey OAM Aquatic Centre is a fitting and enduring tribute that recognises both his legacy and the regional significance of this major community asset.”

Councillor Andrea Friend expressed her gratitude to residents for their involvement in the process and their strong show of support.

“The petition was a heartfelt expression of community pride, and I sincerely thank Member for Keppel Nigel Hutton for initiating it, and to everyone who took the time to sign it,” Councillor Friend said.

“Putting forward this Notice of Motion was about recognising that community sentiment and ensuring Brian Dorey OAM is remembered in a meaningful and lasting way.”

The Capricorn Coast Brian Dorey OAM Aquatic Centre is a cornerstone project for the region, set to deliver modern aquatic and recreational facilities for residents and visitors alike.
