Coffs Harbour to go bananas for world record attempt

Hundreds of locals are set to descend on Coffs Harbour’s Jetty Beach next month to attempt a world record for the largest human banana formation in what is also a playful celebration of the region’s heritage.

The Coffs region has a proud banana-growing history and, over time, the city has grown into a destination loved by generations of Australian families.

If there is going to be a world record involving bananas, locals believe it probably belongs here.

The event, to be hosted by Channel Nine’s Jane DeGraaff and Coffs Harbour Mayor, Nikki Williams, on Saturday 11 April, is part of a community push to support Coffs in the NSW Top Tourism Town Awards.

“Coffs Harbour has brought joy to visitors for generations, and today we’re also emerging as a hub for major events, tourism and new industries and a vibrant, liveable city,” said Mayor Williams.

“Our community loves this town and we want to see it continue to thrive. Tourism plays a vital role in our local economy, supporting jobs, small businesses and the future of our region.”

The giant banana will take shape on the sand as hundreds of locals dressed in yellow take their places to create the formation.

It is expected to be a vibrant and joyful moment that celebrates the city’s past and its future, where the community is invited to share what they love about their Coffs, the Council said in a statement.
