Coffs call to end sportsground name confusion

Coffs Harbour City Council is set to apply to the Geographical Names Board to rename a local sportsground.

Council says the sports field, which is informally called Woolgoolga Sports Ground, should be officially renamed Solitary Islands Sportsground to avoid any confusion with the nearby Wiigulga Sports Complex.

“When we applied to the Geographical Names Board of New South Wales for recognition of the Wiigulga Sports Complex name, they pointed out that the nearby Woolgoolga Sports Ground had never been formally named,” said Council’s Group Leader City Prosperity, Dan Heather.

“The Board also highlighted a possible issue over identifying the correct location in an emergency because of the similarities between the two names and their proximity on Solitary Islands Way.

“In response, we consulted the Woolgoolga Sports Council and it was suggested and agreed, that the most appropriate naming for the Woolgoolga Sports Ground should be based on an obvious geographical reference – and be renamed Solitary Islands Sportsground.”

Councillors endorsed the move and an application to the Geographical Names Board of New South Wales for official recognition of the Solitary Islands Sportsground is to be made.

The Geographical Names Board will put both proposed names on public exhibition over the coming weeks.
