Central Goldfields council to review key intersections

Central Goldfields Shire Council will review two significant intersections in Maryborough in response to community safety concerns.

The intersection at Nolan and Napier Streets will be investigated due to a series of accidents over previous years.

The Burns Street and Mark Twain Drive intersection/pedestrian crossing will also be reviewed due to community safety concerns, Council said.

In September, Council engaged Driscoll Engineering to undertake the review.

The process will involve completing site assessments, observing traffic flow including pedestrians and cyclists, collection and review of any recent crash data, and assessment of traffic volume data.

Central Goldfields Shire Maryborough Ward Councillor, Gerard Murphy said the review had been instigated due to community concern.

“Since being elected I’ve had numerous residents come to me with genuine concern that a serious accident has the potential to occur. Both locations are busy intersections with a mix of vehicle and pedestrian traffic.”

“As a Council we’re committed to doing what we can to ensure the safety of our community.  We look forward to receiving the findings and recommendations from the reports so that changes can be made to avoid future accidents,” he said.

To assist with the assessment, Council has collected new traffic data from the two intersections over parts of September and October to compliment historical data that was already existing.

Driscoll Engineering are currently finalising their report which will include recommendations around potential treatments that would address safety concerns.  Once received, these options will be assessed by Council.
