Central Darling Shire Council is installing CCTV surveillance systems at major landfill facilities across the Shire to assist in the detection of illegal dumping, unlawful disposal practices, vandalism and other criminal activities.
In a statement, the Council said it has become aware that construction and demolition waste is being dumped at Council landfill sites without approval.
“Demolition waste is subject to disposal fees and is not accepted free of charge. Prior arrangements must be made with Council before disposing of this type of waste,” the Council stated.
“Council also wishes to remind people that a confidential document shredding and disposal service is available by prior arrangement and at a prescribed fee. Council is aware that people have been taking confidential documents to landfill sites and attempting to destroy them by burning.
“This practice is believed to have resulted in several fires, particularly at the Menindee tip. Burning of confidential documents at Council landfill facilities is prohibited.”
The Council said it takes these matters seriously. Any business or individual found engaging in illegal activities at Council landfill sites faces prosecution.
“Council is committed to improving landfill infrastructure and waste management services for the benefit of residents, businesses and visitors. To assist Council in maintaining safe and efficient landfill operations, all waste must be disposed of in the designated disposal bays
and in accordance with site requirements.”
“Businesses and residents requiring information about waste disposal fees, construction and demolition waste disposal, or confidential document shredding services are encouraged to contact Central Darling Shire Council before attending a landfill site,” it stated.
