Central Coast Council has achieved a number of key milestones in its Kincumber Tunnel sewer main rehabilitation project, with works continuing to progress safely.
The project is helping maintain the long-term reliability of critical sewer infrastructure serving Green Point, Kincumber and surrounding communities. Works include cleaning, investigation and rehabilitation activities within the Kincumber sewer tunnel system.
Recent milestones include the removal of more than five tonnes of silt from Frost Reserve, completion of surface and concrete works, installation of monitoring equipment and the stable operation of a temporary Odour Control Unit (OCU). Despite some minor issues, Council says the OCU has predominantly performed effectively, with minimal odour impacts reported by the community.
Central Coast Acting Mayor, John Mouland said the Kincumber Tunnel sewer main rehabilitation project demonstrates Council’s commitment to investing in essential infrastructure that supports the community.
“Water and sewer infrastructure is one of the most important services Council provides and rehabilitation work on the Kincumber Tunnel is another example of how we are investing to ensure this system continues to operate reliably for our community now and into the future,” Cr Mouland said.
“This work is being undertaken in a challenging environment and I am pleased to see progress being made while Council maintains a strong focus on safety, environmental protection and reducing impacts on the community.”
Director Water and Sewer, Jamie Loader said extensive planning and preparation had positioned the project well for its next stage.
“Several important enabling works have now been completed, allowing the project team to move into the next phase while continuing to closely monitor network performance and community impacts,” Mr Loader said.
Removal of a dilapidated ladder within the vent shaft is now approximately 30 per cent complete, while planning is underway for the installation of a second temporary OCU to further support odour management during future stages of the project.
The next phase of works will focus on ongoing desilting activities and rehabilitation of the Kincumber vent shaft, including detailed condition assessments to inform future rehabilitation works. Monitoring of the OCU and broader network operations will continue throughout the project.
The Council said its contractors will continue implementing measures to minimise impacts on nearby residents, reserve users and community groups. These measures include odour management, traffic and pedestrian controls, site safety measures, stakeholder communication and ongoing environmental monitoring.
