Plans to build a new four-lane road through one of Brisbane’s fastest-growing suburbs are moving ahead, with Brisbane City Council progressing the Gardner Road extension in Rochedale.
Planning and design has progressed for the new road, with the Council now seeking a construction partner to deliver it.
Rochedale’s population more than doubled between the 2016 and 2021 census, from 3,175 residents to 7,633 in just five years.
The Council says the new Gardner Road connection will provide the infrastructure needed to support this growing community.
“We’re planning to build an entirely new four-lane road between Priestdale and Underwood roads,” said Lord Mayor, Adrian Schrinner.
“Rochedale has grown rapidly and better roads and more homes go hand-in-hand as we plan for the future.
“This new road will help unlock hundreds of new homes while helping to keep Brisbane moving.
“Gardner Road shows what’s possible when all levels of government work together and we want to see more partnerships like this to deliver the infrastructure our growing city needs.”
The project will deliver a new 700-metre connection between Priestdale Road and Underwood Road, improving access to homes, schools, public transport and local businesses.
The project will also include:
- Two signalised intersections with pedestrian crossings;
- A new bridge over the Bulimba Creek East Tributary;
- 2.5 kilometres of on-road bike lanes;
- 1.1 kilometres of shared paths;
- 700 metres of new footpaths.
The Council said the new road will complete a missing link in Rochedale’s road network, creating another north-south connection through the growing suburb, while new signals and crossings around School Road and Priestdale Road will make everyday trips safer and easier.
The new connection will also provide easier access to Rochedale State High School and the Rochedale Bus Station and Park ‘n’ Ride.
“Rochedale has changed enormously in recent years, and this new road will provide the better local connections our growing community needs,” said Councillor, Steven Huang.
“This new connection will help take the pressure off surrounding roads and make it easier to get to school, work, local shops and public transport.
“I know local residents will be as excited as I am that we’re taking the next major step towards delivering it for our community.”
A new dedicated wildlife crossing beneath the new bridge will support native animals living along the Bulimba Creek East Tributary.
The State Government has committed $47 million towards the project, which is expected to help unlock around 685 new homes.
Subject to the tender process, construction is expected to begin in 2027.
