Bowral sewage plant upgrade review goes online

An update on Wingecarribee Shire Council’s proposed upgrade of the Bowral Sewage Treatment Plant is now available on Council’s website following endorsement from Council’s Interim Administrator Mr Viv May PSM.

Mr May adopted a recommendation to place the draft Review of Environmental Factors (REF) online at Council’s Ordinary Meeting earlier this month.

Council’s General Manager, Lisa Miscamble said undertaking the REF was a critical step towards upgrading the sewage treatment plant (STP).

“Although the existing Bowral STP is operating well and within its licence, the plant is nearing its design capacity and needs to be upgraded to accommodate future growth within the catchment,” she said.

“The proposed upgrade is designed to protect the local environment and improve public amenity for years to come.”

The Bowral STP services the areas of Bowral, East Bowral and Burradoo and was last upgraded in 2006.

The draft Review of Environmental Factors is a comprehensive document which details the proposed STP upgrade and assesses the potential environmental impacts of the project and the measures that will be undertaken to mitigate any possible impacts.

Ms Miscamble said it was important for the community to be aware of complexity of the project.

“It’s essential that we secure wastewater treatment needs for our Shire’s largest town now and into the future,” she said.

“At the same time, we have the opportunity to enhance the water quality in the Wingecarribee River.”

Residents can view the draft Review of Environmental Factors for the proposed Bowral STP Upgrade at  www.wsc.nsw.gov.au/projects.

An onsite tour of the Bowral STP will also be held on Saturday 20 November for interested residents. Persons wishing to attend the onsite presentation can email Council at capital.projects@wsc.nsw.gov.au to confirm their attendance.
