Blue Mountains council welcomes highway detour investment

Blue Mountains City Council has welcomed the NSW Government’s commitment of $50 million to strengthen key detour routes during the ongoing closure of the Great Western Highway at Victoria Pass.

Mayor, Mark Greenhill said the funding was a critical and timely investment that will improve safety, reliability and resilience across the alternative routes currently carrying significantly increased traffic volumes.

“This is a necessary investment in the roads our community, freight operators and visitors are relying on every day,” Mayor Greenhill said.

Council acknowledged the work already underway on key corridors including Darling Causeway and Chifley Road, and said continued delivery at pace will be important as the closure persists.

While welcoming the investment, Council is calling on the NSW Government to provide greater certainty around timelines for reopening the Great Western Highway.

“Our community understands the complexity of the situation, but we need clearer timeframes to support planning for residents, businesses and visitors,” Mayor Greenhill said.

“The longer this disruption continues, the more important it is that people have confidence in what comes next.”

Council also noted the importance of continued support for affected communities.

“The Great Western Highway may be closed, but the Blue Mountains remains open for business,” the Mayor said.

“We encourage visitors to continue coming to the region and supporting our local businesses – there are safe and accessible ways to get here, and these upgrades will only strengthen that.”
