Bega Valley Shire Mayor, Russell Fitzpatrick says he is disappointed at the NSW Government’s lack of funding support for the redevelopment of the Eden Wharf area and marina.
“I am deeply disappointed to learn that the NSW Government has not allocated adequate funds to support the crucial redevelopment of the Eden Wharf area and marina,” said Mayor Fitzpatrick.
“This news comes as a setback for our community and may raise concerns about the feasibility of other planned developments in the area.”
He said the Eden Wharf area and marina holds significant importance to the Bega Valley Shire as well as the broader region.
“Investment in the area will provide numerous benefits, including job creation, increased visitation and spending, and enhanced recreational opportunities.”
“As Eden continues to establish itself as a prominent destination for both domestic and international cruise ship passengers, the undeveloped wharf area presents a missed opportunity for revenue generation to benefit the NSW economy. The first impression that disembarking passengers have of our shire should be one that reflects the potential and vibrancy of our community, not an underdeveloped harbour.
“This situation is simply not good enough for our community and I will be seeking a response from relevant ministers to reconsider their decision and to recognise the long-term benefits this project can bring not only to our local residents but also to the broader regional economy.
“We remain committed to supporting development of the Eden wharf area as an important gateway to the Bega Valley. This state-owned asset requires state funding to fully realise its potential as a crowd pleaser and money earner. Our community deserves nothing less,” Mayor Fitzpatrick said.
The Mayor’s comments follow the release of a statement by Transport for NSW, announcing that a review of two proposals for the Snug Cove Maritime Precinct had been completed.
“Following the evaluation of the proposals Transport for NSW is unable to move forward with these, due to various commercial and risk related factors,” it said.
In November last year, Transport for NSW sought Expressions of Interest for the mixed-use marina development, which was expected to include:
– Wet berth marina accommodating commercial and recreational vessels
– Marina operations facilities, boat repair and maintenance facilities
– Boat refuelling and pump-out facilities
– Commercial, retail, food and beverage
– Short-term accommodation
– Public domain and car parking
“We had hoped that Snug Cove Marine Precinct would attract more interest from the private sector to invest in this unique partnership opportunity. However, we believe the current economic climate particularly in the construction industry may have impacted this process at this time,” the Department said.
“We are continuing to explore other potential avenues and options for the development of the Snug Cove Maritime Precinct.
“Unfortunately, this was not the outcome we had hoped for. Right now, we need to work with several areas of Government on next steps.
“This may take some time, as we reset the project and we will update the community later in the year.”
