Bass Coast welcomes State Govt commitment to Phillip Island grand prix

Bass Coast Shire Council has acknowledged yesterday’s announcement by the Victorian Government reaffirming its support for the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix to remain at Phillip Island.

The Government has ruled out a request from Dorna Sports to move the event to Albert Park and committed to providing additional funding to support the event beyond 2026, on the condition it remains at Phillip Island.

Mayor, Rochelle Halstead said Council thanked the Victorian Government for its continued support.

“We appreciate the Victorian Government reaffirming Phillip Island as the home of the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix and recognising the importance of the event to our region,” Mayor Halstead said.

She said the announcement also reflected the strength of Council’s advocacy and the broader community campaign to keep the event on Phillip Island.

“Council has worked closely with regional partners, businesses and our community to strongly advocate for the MotoGP to remain where it belongs,” she said.

“I’d like to thank everyone who supported the campaign and helped highlight the value this event brings to Bass Coast.”

As regional Australia’s largest international sporting event, the MotoGP attracts tens of thousands of visitors each year, delivering significant benefits for local jobs, tourism and businesses.

Council also welcomed the Government’s commitment to invest in the future of the event, supporting its ongoing success at Phillip Island.

“Phillip Island is the home of the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix, and we are proud to support it,” said Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events, Steve Dimopoulos.
