Bass Coast Mayor extends sympathies following San Remo drowning tragedy

Bass Coast Shire Council has extended its sympathies to the family and loved ones of a woman who tragically lost her life at Punchbowl Rocks near San Remo on Good Friday.

Emergency services were called to the area at around 8.30am yesterday following reports that three people had been swept into the water from the rocks. One woman was able to make her way back to shore, while a second woman was later located in the water but sadly could not be revived. The search for a 41-year-old man who also entered the water remains ongoing.

Bass Coast Mayor, Rochelle Halstead (pictured, above) expressed the community’s sorrow at the devastating news.

“Our hearts go out to the family and friends of those involved in this terrible incident. This is an unimaginable loss, and on behalf of Council and the wider Bass Coast community, I offer our heartfelt condolences during this incredibly difficult time,” said Mayor Halstead.

“Punchbowl Rocks is a rugged and remote section of coastline, and Council echoes the advice of emergency services in urging caution around coastal rock platforms, where conditions can change rapidly and become dangerous without warning.”

For the most up-to-date and accurate information about beach safety, Council encourages the community and visitors to use the Surf Life Saving Australia BeachSafe app, which provides real-time updates on local conditions and hazards. Visitors are also reminded to follow all safety signage at beach entry points.
