Alice Springs Town Council Mayor, Asta Hill, has extended her condolences to the family of former Northern Territory Administrator, Ted Egan AO, who is being remembered at a state memorial service at the Alice Springs Convention Centre today.
Mr Egan, who passed away in December last year, will today be remembered for his strong advocacy for Indigenous rights, his public service and his musical abilities.
“Ted Egan AO was a true Territorian – musician, author, storyteller and public servant – whose life’s work helped shape the character and conscience of Central Australia,” said Mayor Hill.
“As Administrator of the Northern Territory from 2003 to 2007, Ted served with warmth and integrity, always championing the people and cultures that make this place extraordinary.
“Through more than 30 albums and many books, and songs like Gurindji Blues, he gave voice to our histories and to the movement for land rights – inviting Australians to listen, learn and walk together.
“Many of us had the pleasure of joining Ted in a sing-along in years past, and those memories will be very strong for us today.
“On behalf of the Town Council and our community, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Nerys Evans and to Ted’s family. His legacy lives wherever stories are shared, music is played, and we choose generosity over indifference,” the Mayor said.
