Gladstone Regional Council Mayor and newly-named Australian Local Government Association (ALGA) President, Matt Burnett, has been elected to lead the Local Government Association of Queensland (LGAQ) as its President.
Mayor Burnett (pictured), who was elected to the position for a four-year term at the LGAQ’s 128th Annual Conference this week, thanked delegates and promised he “would not let you down”.
He vowed to be an “LGAQ president for the entire State” and to “always put Queensland councils first”.
Mayor Burnett has been the LGAQ’S Acting President since June after a local government career spanning nearly 25 years. He was first elected to Gladstone council in 2000, then served five years as deputy mayor before being elected mayor in 2016.
