Albury taxiway extension to boost airport efficiency

Albury City Council has announced the completion of its $6.05 million Taxiway Charlie extension at Albury Airport, which will improve safety and reduce delays to landings and take-offs by allowing aircraft to move more efficiently on and off the runway.

The project was supported by $1.63 million in Australian Government funding through the Regional Airport Program Round 2, which has also previously contributed to several other airport improvements, including upgrades to Taxiway Bravo, the North East Apron and runway lighting.

As part of the Albury Airport Master Plan 2018, the extension was identified as a key priority to improve circulation on the airfield and reduce the need for aircraft to backtrack along the runway. The project was also recommended during a technical inspection to help minimise interruptions to flight activity and improve operational safety, particularly during busy periods.

The extension continues the upgrade of Taxiway Charlie completed in 2019, when the existing section was rebuilt to accommodate increased aircraft movements. The latest works extend the taxiway by around 510 metres, connecting it to the eastern turning node of the runway.
The project was delivered by Albury company AP Delaney & Co Pty Ltd, which worked closely with AlburyCity to complete the upgrade while maintaining ongoing airport operations.

Mayor, Kevin Mack said the project represents another major step forward for Albury Airport.

“Albury Airport is an essential link for passengers, freight and emergency services across our region,” Mayor Mack said.

“The completion of the Taxiway Charlie extension will make operations safer and more efficient, supporting the growing needs of both commercial and emergency aviation.”

Meanwhile, the contract for the extension of the airport’s Taxiway Alpha was recently awarded to local company Excell Gray Bruni Pty Ltd, for a tendered price of $2.88 million.

Council says the project, which will extend Taxiway Alpha by approximately 300 metres to the western threshold of the runway, will improve operational efficiency, safety and capacity for both commercial and emergency aviation services. Construction is expected to commence early next year.
