Albury City Council’s Banjora Children’s Centre is celebrating 40 years of nurturing, educating and connecting generations of local families.
Since opening its doors in 1985, Banjora has supported more than 2,000 families, becoming a trusted part of early childhood for many across the city. In a true sign of its impact, families who once attended as children are now returning to enrol their own, the Council says.
“Banjora has always been more than a childcare service – it’s a place where lifelong friendships form and community connections grow,” said Banjora Acting Service Coordinator, Karli Chambers.
“We’ve seen generations of families walk through our doors, and many of our educators have been part of that journey for years – even decades. It’s a privilege to have shared in so many families’ stories.”
Council-owned and operated, the not-for-profit, 50-place long day care centre has been a cornerstone of early learning in the community. Its long-serving educators are also a defining feature of its success, with most staff having been part of the team for at least five years, and some for more than 15 and 20. One educator has been with Banjora since it first opened in 1985 – a testament to the dedication and continuity families have come to value.
Mayor, Kevin Mack said Banjora’s longevity and reputation speak volumes about the important role it plays in supporting families.
“For 40 years, Banjora has provided not just early learning, but a foundation for belonging and community connection,” Mayor Mack said.
“That intergenerational connection, where parents who once attended now bring their own children, shows how deeply valued Banjora is by the people of Albury.”
To mark the occasion, current and past families, educators and staff are invited to join the 40th birthday celebration on Saturday 22 November from 10am to 12pm.
