A major revamp of Gilgandra’s Lucas Bridge is progressing, with completion expected within the next six weeks.
The project involves demolition of the old timber bridge and construction of a new concrete bridge over the Castlereagh River at Breelong, greatly improving access for the local community.
“The bridge beams have been installed and the bridge deck will be poured prior to the end of August,” said Council’s Director Infrastructure, Daryl Colwell.
“Weather permitting, Council will be undertaking road works to construct the bridge approaches in late August, which will see a 2m fill for the slab and a small curb established.”
Wet weather has caused some delays to earlier project stages.
“The long term benefits of this project is great and we appreciate the community’s patience while this major project is undertaken and look forward to opening it to the community,” said General Manager, David Neeves.
“Upgrade of the Lucas Bridge crossing has been an identified need for some time. Council secured significant funding through the Australian Government Bridges Renewal Program, which in addition to Council’s own budget allocation secured the project future”.
The bridge is one of the last to be replaced in Council’s timber bridge replacement program. Council says just two remaining bridges still require refurbishment – Jack’s Creek Bridge, where planning has commenced and Yarragrin Creek Bridge, where preliminary planning is underway.
