Councillors vote to rename bridge after former MP

Maitland City Councillors have unanimously supported a Mayoral Minute to rename the city’s new Melville Ford Bridge in honour of former Maitland MP, Milton Morris AO.

Affectionately known as Mr Maitland, Milton (pictured) served as the region’s state MP for 25 years and dedicated his life to supporting the local community.

“He was particularly passionate about road safety and during his time as Transport Minister, he introduced the compulsory wearing of seatbelts, the breathalyser and the L and P-plate system,” the Council said in a statement.

“We will now investigate the process of renaming the bridge as the ‘Milton Morris Bridge,’ in honour of his legacy.”

Work underway on the Melville Ford Bridge last week.

Upcoming works scheduled on the new bridge work site include finalising piers and abutments, building the new bridge deck and road works approaching both ends of the bridge.

Work is set to be completed early spring, weather permitting and the bridge will remain closed during this time, the Council confirmed.
