Brisbane City Council has announced an upgrade of the city’s CCTV network to help keep visitors and residents safe in its major entertainment precincts.
Lord Mayor, Adrian Schrinner said Council’s 24-hour CitySafe network was crucial to helping deter crime and assisting law enforcement authorities.
“Brisbane is Australia’s lifestyle capital and making sure our fantastic range of entertainment precincts continue to be safe is critically important,” Lord Mayor Schrinner said.
“We’re all aware of reports about increasing crime, particularly youth crime, so our CCTV cameras have an even more important role to play right now.”
Council says that in the past year alone, CCTV cameras have captured more than 23,000 incidents across the CBD and surrounding areas.
“This included approximately 160 incidents of suspected or stolen property, 50 reports of vandalism, 63 fires and more than 1,000 reports of people acting disorderly,” the Lord Mayor said.
“By maintaining a watchful eye on our streets and public spaces, the network is central to the overall security and protection of our community.”
Council currently has 145 cameras in operation across the city. The Council now plans to bolster the network across public spaces in the Brisbane Central Business District, including Queen Street Mall, Valley Malls, and City Botanic Gardens.
“We’re planning to upgrade the existing cameras with improved technology to further improve public safety,” said Lord Mayor Schrinner.
“By upgrading our network, we are enhancing our ability to prevent and address criminal activities, providing an environment that call can enjoy safely.”
