Tiny Port Broughton’s big tourism win

South Australia’s Barunga West Council says it’s delighted that the seaside town of Port Broughton on the Yorke Peninsula has been awarded the 2023 SA Tiny Tourism Town Award.

Barunga West Mayor, Leonie Kerley said the accolade, delivered at the recent South Australian Top Tourism Town Awards ceremony, was an incredible honour.

“This achievement is a testament to the tireless efforts of numerous individuals over the past years who have worked relentlessly to make our town an appealing tourism hotspot,” the Mayor said.

She said Port Broughton’s state recognition was the result of significant efforts made in recent years.

The town has undergone multi-million-dollar upgrades to its tourism park, development of all abilities and accessible foreshore facilities, while an array of regular events like Seafood on Spencer, the Seaside Market, a Show’n’Shine, New Year’s Eve fireworks, and the Feast on the Foreshore have added to the vibrant atmosphere and tourist appeal of Port Broughton, the Mayor said.

The town, located 175km northwest of Adelaide on the Yorke Peninsula, is popular among young families, nature, fishing and water sports enthusiasts.

“What sets Port Broughton apart is its warm, welcoming community. The township offers a unique blend of adventure and relaxation that will make anyone feel at home,” Mayor Kerley said.

“Just 10 minutes walking along our beautiful foreshore, basking in the sun and the soothing sea breeze, is enough to make anyone feel more relaxed and calmer.

“We are delighted to receive this recognition and look forward to showcasing our township on a national stage at the Australian Top Tourism Town Awards later this year,” she said.

The Top Tourism Town Awards celebrate towns that provide incredible visitor experiences while demonstrating a shared commitment to developing tourism in their respective regions. The program is delivered annually by South Australia’s peak tourism body, the Tourism Industry Council South Australia (TiCSA).

“We congratulate the winners and the entrants of the 2023 South Australian Top Tourism Town Awards for their contributions to the vibrancy and appeal of our state’s tourism industry,” said TiCSA’s Chief Executive Officer, Shaun de Bruyn.

“Each tourism town adds its own distinct charm to South Australia, providing amazing experiences to visitors from within SA, around Australia, and around the world.”
