The first two of four animal-themed murals earmarked for the Burdekin Shire have been completed in the Ayr CBD.
The brainchild of Townsville-based artist John Bradshaw, the snake and brolga murals were recently completed on buildings in Graham and Queen Streets, with future artworks planned for Brandon and Giru.
A major art piece celebrating the region’s rich history is also due to be commissioned in Home Hill soon.
Burdekin Shire Council Deputy Mayor and Chair of the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) Advisory Group, Cr Sue Perry said the first two murals had already begun to delight unsuspecting passers-by.
“Council has received a lot of really positive feedback since their installation on the Burdekin Street Art Trail, and I want to commend Townsville’s John Bradshaw for his incredible artistry bringing these animals to life,” Cr Perry said.
“We are excited to work with John to bring further splashes of colour to more townships across the Shire in the coming months.
“Public murals are designed to stimulate discussion and prompt an enhanced appreciation for art and culture, with Council able to commission this series of four pieces thanks to the State Government’s Works for Queensland program.
“Some pieces on the Burdekin Street Art Trail are obvious, gracing streets across the Shire, while others – like our new brolga friend – are fantastic surprises in laneways that you may not notice on your first journey past. I invite everyone in North Queensland to take their own street art adventure through the Burdekin to discover something new.”
Further murals will be completed over coming months. John Bradshaw’s Burdekin street art installations are funded by the Queensland Government’s Works for Queensland program.
