Brisbane City Council has awarded almost $65,000 in this year’s round of Native Wildlife Carers Grants.
Grants ranging from $500 to $5000 have been awarded to 18 wildlife carers so they can continue protecting and saving local native wildlife.
The program supports groups and individuals devoted to rehabilitating sick, injured, and orphaned native wildlife, including amphibians, bats, gliders, birds, possums, koalas, and reptiles.
The Council has awarded more than $1.1 million worth of grants since the program began in 2008.
Carers can use the funds to help cover the purchases of a range of items, including:
- veterinary expenses;
- travel expenses to rescue, release and transfer native wildlife;
- feeding utensils;
- care blankets;
- travel bags;
- nest boxes;
- pre-release cages;
- enclosures;
- aviaries.
“Brisbane is Australia’s lifestyle capital and looking after our native wildlife is essential to keep Brisbane one of the best places in the world to visit,” said Lord Mayor, Adrian Schrinner.
“Native wildlife carers put in long hours to save our most vulnerable native species, and we are committed to ensuring they can continue their great work.
“We’ve seen so many incredible outcomes of animals being rehabilitated and released back into the wild through their efforts.
“I want to congratulate all the successful recipients and express my sincere thanks for protecting our native wildlife,” he said.
