$5m Origin contribution for new Murrumbidgee medical centre

Jerilderie’s proposed new medical centre is a step closer, with Murrumbidgee Council formally accepting a $5 million contribution from Origin Energy through a Voluntary Planning Agreement (VPA) linked to the Yanco Delta wind development.

The contribution was marked by the official handover of a cheque from Origin representatives to Council. The Council says the funding will support the delivery of a modern medical facility that will strengthen access to health services for residents across the district.

Mayor, Ruth McRae OAM said the project was a key initiative that will support the long-term health and wellbeing of the local community.

“This is a very exciting milestone for Jerilderie and the wider region. Council is pleased to be working with Origin to deliver this essential health infrastructure,” Mayor McRae said.

“Once operational, the new facility will provide vital services close to home and help secure ongoing medical care for our residents.”

The proposed centre will offer general practice, dental care, allied health and minor procedures.

Mayor McRae said the project also aims to address the challenges rural communities face in attracting and retaining healthcare professionals.

“This purpose-built facility will not only enhance the services currently available but also support the recruitment and retention of medical staff in the Jerilderie area,” she said.

On hand for the cheque presentation, Origin’s head of approvals, access and social advocacy Lauren Barnaby said, “Our Yanco Delta Wind Farm will not only supply renewable energy for homes and businesses in NSW, we also expect to make a substantial financial contribution to the region through our community benefits program.

“For over a decade, Origin has proudly supported NSW communities through community investment programs and I’m delighted our latest contribution will be used by Council on such an important piece of infrastructure to support community health and wellbeing,” Ms Barnaby said.

While funding has now been secured, the location for the new medical centre is yet to be confirmed. Council is currently consulting with stakeholders, with a project timeline also still to be set.

The Yanco Delta Wind and Energy Storage Project has received both NSW Government development approval (December 2023) and EPBC approval (February 2024). Origin Energy announced its acquisition of the project from Virya Energy in April last year.

Under the conditions of consent, the project proponent is required to enter into a Voluntary Planning Agreement with local councils to support public infrastructure.
