Local athletes are kicking goals with a smoother playing field after the completion of major upgrades to the Beaman Park Sports Fields at Earlwood.
The $3 million project included the reconstruction of the playing surface, additional sports fields, and lighting, plus modernisation of the irrigation and drainage systems on the eastern fields.
Canterbury-Bankstown Mayor, Bilal El-Hayek said he was excited to see local athletes competing on the new turf.
“The upgrades will make a huge difference for those who enjoy Beaman Park recreationally and those who use it for weekend sports,” Mayor El-Hayek said.
“With the surface now completely level and the state-of-the-art drainage systems in place, we will see fewer games being postponed because of the weather.”
Football Canterbury CEO, Trent Thomas said everyone from Beaman Park’s three major football clubs is eager to return to their home ground.
“Beaman Park is a major piece of infrastructure that we utilise, and the number of games it can host on any weekend is unlike any other ground,” he said.
“The new drainage will provide more certainty to play on the fields when there’s adverse weather and the lighting upgrades will permit for safe training for all participants, especially the children who train on weeknights.
“It also means we can have up to six different fields of play operating at any time, so it really is quite significant.”
Funding for the project is in partnership with the NSW Government through a $1 million grant awarded through the NSW Office of Sport’s Multi-Sport Community Facility Fund.
“Local sporting infrastructure plays a critical role in keeping communities healthy, active and connected and these improvements will allow the fields to cater for more participants across sporting codes,” said Minister for Sport, Steve Kamper.
NSW Member for Canterbury, Sophie Cotsis said the investment in Beaman Park was “a great example of how we can create better facilities for our community”.
“Not only will this provide safer and more reliable playing conditions, but it will also foster greater participation in sports at the local level, benefiting both families and athletes for years to come,” she said.
