$17m Queanbeyan CBD refresh to start next month

Queanbeyan–Palerang Regional Council has confirmed its $17 million ‘once-in-a-generation’ Monaro Street Refresh project will get underway next month.

“We know these works will be disruptive, but this is a once-in-a-generation upgrade that will improve the safety, accessibility and look of the Queanbeyan CBD for years to come,” the Council said in a statement announcing a date for the start of works.

Queanbeyan’s Monaro Street, will be closed from the Atkinson Street roundabout to Lowe Street for a minimum of six months for construction. During stage 1 of the construction phase, north-south travel on Crawford Street will still be available, but there will be no right or left turn onto Monaro Street.

“The road footprint will be the same, but we will have an upgraded street the whole length on Monaro Street from Lowe Street to Collett Street,” Council said.

“The existing alignment and traffic lights will remain. We will have a quieter road surface, modified medians, improved pedestrian crossings and footpaths. We will retain the existing parking.”

Council has appointed Dale and Hitchcock Civil Pty Ltd as the construction contractor.

The project will also include an upgrade of stormwater drainage and in-ground services; and reduction of gutter height.

Upgrading the main street of Queanbeyan has been a priority of Council and the community for many years and has been a key feature of several community engagement activities, Council stated.

The project is being funded through $10 million of grant funding under the NSW Government’s Drought Stimulus Package. Council has contributed $5.25m for the project. Transport for NSW has allocated an additional $2 million funding.

Construction is expected to take six months.
