Wingecarribee Shire Council has awarded an $11.56 million contract to rehabilitate Old South Road to Stefanutti Construction Pty Ltd.
Wingecarribee Shire Council’s Director Service and Project Delivery, Karin Targa said the contract announcement was the final step before construction began on the road.
“The upgrade of Old South Road has been many years in the planning,” she said.
“Council looks forward to working with Stefanutti Construction to refurbishing one of our Shire’s most important thoroughfares.”
Ms Targa said a total of 9.7 kilometres of the road between Merrigang Street in Bowral to Aylmerton Road in Mittagong would be reconstructed as part of the contract.
“Works will involve road pavement widening and rehabilitation, installation of guardrails, construction of stormwater pits and pipes and other associated works,” she said.
“When complete the road will provide motorists with a safer and much improved road surface.”
The first stage of rehabilitation works is expected to commence in early 2023.
“Re-building Old South Road will be one of the largest and most complex civil construction undertakings Council has committed to in recent years,” Ms Targa said.
“We thank the various stakeholders for their assistance to date and all Highland motorists for their continued patience.”
The Old South Road Rehabilitation Project is funded through a combination of Federal and State Government grants and Council contributions. Funding has been secured from the Safer Roads Program, Fixing Local Roads Program and Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program.
