Work kicks off on $60m Frankston stadium revamp

A bold new chapter is kicking off for sport, recreation, and community connections in Frankston City, with work now underway on the $60 million Frankston Stadium redevelopment.

Set to be the largest infrastructure project ever delivered by Frankston City Council, the stadium will transform into a modern, high-capacity sporting hub right in the heart of Seaford and directly opposite Kananook Railway Station and next to the new $24 million Kananook Car Park.

Previously, Council’s biggest infrastructure projects were Peninsula Aquatic and Recreation Centre – PARC ($49.7 million) which opened in 2014, and more recently, Jubilee Park Stadium ($35.9 million) which opened in 2023. In the 1990s, the Frankston Arts Centre (previously the Frankston Cultural Centre) topped the list with a total cost of $15.8 million.

When complete, the stadium will offer state-of-the-art facilities, including 10 basketball courts, Frankston’s first purpose-built gymnastics hall, and broadcast-ready infrastructure that will attract regional and national events to the city.

“What we’re building here goes far beyond sport,” said Frankston City Mayor, Kris Bolam.

“With the capacity to host televised events and attract visitors from across Victoria and beyond, this facility will create new opportunities for local businesses, grow local jobs and support the next generation of players, gymnasts and community members.

“Council is proud to be able to deliver a project of the scale with the support of the Australian and Victorian Governments.”

The redevelopment will also provide a much-needed new home for the Frankston & District Basketball Association (FDBA) and Bayside Gymnastics Club (BGC) — two rapidly growing organisations that have outgrown their current venues.

“This is an historic time not only the history of basketball in this region but for Frankston,” said Frankston and District Basketball Association CEO, Wayne Holdsworth.

“This redevelopment signifies trust and a commitment to respect demonstrated time and again by each level of Government and particularly Frankston Council.

“Our 10,000 active participants are excited for the future of basketball in Frankston with a stadium that will deliver the opportunity for physical fitness and importantly mental fitness.”

The redevelopment is the result of years of advocacy by Council, the FDBA, BGC, and the broader Frankston community. It has been carefully planned to align with Council’s Community Vision and Council Plan 2020-24, which were shaped by strong community support for the project.

The stadium has also been designed with the broader Kananook precinct in mind, including extensive consultation with user groups to ensure seamless connections to surrounding facilities such as the Kananook Car Park and Kananook Reserve. The stadium and car park upgrades represent a total investment of $84 million in the precinct.

Stadium key features:
 Two-storey, 10-court stadium (six new, four upgraded)
 Includes two multi-purpose courts suitable for basketball, futsal, badminton and
volleyball
 Show court with retractable seating for 1,000 spectators
 Broadcast-ready infrastructure to host and televise major events
 Frankston’s first purpose-built community gymnastics hall
 New café, accessible changerooms and lift
 Upstairs viewing areas and upgraded forecourt
 Improved landscaping and upgraded pathways connecting to Kananook Reserve and
Kananook Car Park
 Sustainable design targeting 5 Star GreenStar certification through the Green Building
Council of Australia
 Together with the new Kananook Car Park, it will provide 430 parking spaces, plus six
motorcycle spaces and 102 bicycle parking spaces for the precinct once complete

The stadium is funded by Council, with $15 million from the Australian Government under its Priority Community Infrastructure Program, and the Victorian Government. Council also acknowledges the valuable support of Sport and Recreation Victoria, Gymnastics Victoria, and Basketball Victoria.

“This is an exciting time for basketball in Frankston City. The Victorian Government is proud to partner with both Local and Federal Government in the continued growth and development of the sport within our local community that will benefit future generations to come,” said State Member for Frankston, Paul Edbrooke.
