Waverley Council to spread its open space wings

Waverley Council has endorsed its new Open Space and Recreation Strategy 2021-2031 for its almost 80 parks and reserves and associated facilities.

Mayor of Waverley, Paula Masselos said the strategy would provide a cohesive framework to help Council maximise existing open space and recreation areas and identify available opportunities for future use.

“The aim of the strategy is to improve the lives of existing and future Waverley communities and visitors by delivering infrastructure that supports health and wellbeing outcomes and encompasses biodiversity value,” Mayor Masselos said.

“Waverley’s beaches, parks and bushland gullies provide respite from city living and opportunity for the community to connect and live healthy and active lifestyles. This strategy will help us address the demand for additional recreational and sporting facilities in a highly urbanised area where the potential to create additional public open space is limited.”

The Strategy builds upon work already undertaken by Council in this space including extensive community consultation for the Waverley Community Strategic Plan. It also includes how to best manage important community assets such as beaches, community halls, barbecues and picnic facilities.
