Level 1 water restrictions will come into effect from midnight on Tuesday 10 February for town water use in Binnaway and remain in place until further notice, Warrumbungle Shire Council has confirmed.
The Council says the restrictions are being introduced due to high water demand, ongoing hot weather, high evaporation rates and limited rainfall.
Mayor, Kathryn Rindfleish said the decision has been made to help preserve the town’s water supply for the community. Binnaway’s water supply is sourced from the Castlereagh River.
“The restrictions are a proactive step and a reminder that the community may be heading into a drier period,” she said.
“This could be the start of a dry season, so now is the time for everyone to start getting into the habit of being water wise.
“Small changes made early can make a real difference in helping us protect local water supplies and avoid tighter restrictions later on.”
Other towns in the municipality are also on notice. Coonabarabran’s Timor Dam is currently at 79% capacity with approximately 901 megalitres remaining in storage. If levels drop to 70%, the Council says Level 1 water restrictions will be introduced.
“If there is no significant rainfall and based on current and predicted water demand levels, Council forecasts this level will be reached during the week commencing 16 March 2026,” the Council confirmed in a statement.
Council is closely monitoring Mendooran, Merrygoen and Dunedoo water supplies, with restrictions to be introduced if required.
