Warrumbungle council announces water restrictions

Warrumbungle Shire Council has announced Level 1 water restrictions will be implemented from Tuesday 24 March for the communities of Mendooran and Merrygoen, and will remain in place until further notice.

The Council said the decision was made due to higher than average water demand, limited rainfall and declining flows in the Castlereagh River.

For the community of Binnaway, Level 1 water restrictions will continue to remain in place.

Council also advisef the community of Coonabarabran that Level 1 water restrictions will be implemented from 12am on Tuesday 31 March until further notice.

As of 12 March 2026, Timor Dam is at 74% capacity, with approximately 844 megalitres remaining in storage. The community should be aware that Level 1 water restrictions are triggered when Timor Dam reaches 70% capacity, said Mayor, Kathryn Reinfleish.

“While our storages remain at a reasonable level, implementing Level 1 water restrictions now helps ensure the long term security of our water supply,” Mayor Rindfleish said.

“We encourage residents to be mindful of their water use and take simple steps to conserve water wherever possible.”

The broader community is being reminded to conserve water where possible and to refer to water saving tips available on Warrumbungle Shire Council’s website and Facebook page.

Level 1 restrictions focus on reducing non-essential water use and helping extend available water supplies during dry conditions.
