Brisbane City Council has reached a milestone in the rollout of its Village Precinct Program, with 20 neighbourhood improvement projects delivered since it was launched in 2018.
Lord Mayor, Adrian Schrinner said the initiative had transformed local suburbs into vibrant, bustling areas that drew people from near and far, and helped local businesses thrive.
“Brisbane is a city of neighbourhoods, and these upgrades are all about making Brisbane even better for future generations,” he said.
“If you’ve recently visited Manly Harbour, Ashgrove West, Coorparoo Junction or Martha Street, Camp Hill, you would have noticed what a difference these makeovers has had in these local precincts.”
Lord Mayor Schrinner said the 20th Village Precinct Project on Lumley Street in Upper Mount Gravatt had just been completed, with the community invited to celebrate the transformation on Saturday 20 May.
“Our improvements make the area more attractive with new art murals, street trees and garden beds,” he said.
“Footpath upgrades, new bespoke street furniture and on-street disabled parking bays with kerb ramps will make Lumley Street more accessible and inclusive for residents of all ages and abilities.
“These projects are all about supporting local businesses by increasing foot traffic and the extending the amount of time people want to spend in their neighbourhood.”
Sweet Crumbs patisserie owner, Wayne Lee, said since the Ashgrove West Village Precinct Project had helped bring in more customers.
“Sweet Crumbs is a tiny shop right on the main road and before the Village Precinct Upgrade, there wasn’t much space outside,” Mr Lee said.
“With the widening of the footpath and the installation of seating and some screening from the main road, it is a much more pleasant space for our customers to stay a while and enjoy the menu.
“It’s really helped to expand our capacity.”
Lord Mayor Schrinner said the next project in the pipeline would be Park Road in Milton, which will benefit from new signage, lighting, footpath improvements, landscaping and street trees.
