City of Stonnington Council has welcomed today’s announcement from the Victorian Government confirming the long term future of the Swinburne University site in Prahran as an education and arts precinct.
The announcement by the Minister for Higher Education and Training and Skills, Gayle Tierney, today outlined the Victorian Government’s plans to purchase the campus and deliver a long-term plan for students and the community.
“We’re backing the future of Prahran’s vibrant education and arts precinct – and ensuring Victorians get the very best training and jobs opportunities locally and right across the state,” the Minister said.
“The former Liberal-National Government made a mess of the Prahran campus and can’t be trusted to back TAFE –it has taken the Andrews Labor Government to secure the future of high-quality training at the site.”
City of Stonnington Mayor, Jami Klisaris said the announcement was incredibly exciting for Prahran, Stonnington and Victoria’s education and arts communities.
“Securing this site as a long term education and arts hub will provide generational outcomes in Stonnington for residents and students,” she said.
“There was some uncertainty in our community about how this site would be used longer term, so we’re delighted about this outcome.
“On behalf of Council, I thank the Victorian Government for this investment in Stonnington and our local members who have helped to advocate for this to happen.”
