Local Government NSW (LGNSW) has acknowledged the passing of former long-serving Mayor of Manly, David Hay MBE, who passed away at a Manly Vale aged care facility last week, aged 91.
Mr Hay served on Manly Council for 23 years, with six terms as Mayor. He also served in State Parliament as the Member for Manly (1984-1991) and continued his service to our sector by taking on the role of Minister for Local Government and Planning (1998-1991).
“On behalf of the local government sector, I wish to acknowledge the sad passing of former Mayor of Manly, Mr David Hay,” said Acting LGNSW President, Claire Pontin.
“On behalf of councils across the state, I extend our sincere condolences to all of Mr Hay’s loved ones, including his wife, Jean Hay AM, who was also a long-term Mayor of Manly.”
In an online post, former Prime Minister, Tony Abbott, said several generations of the Hay family had been magnificent contributors to the local community.
“Throughout his long public life, David was tirelessly supported by his wife, Jean Hay AM, who has herself been a substantial figure in the governance of the Beaches community,” Mr Abbott wrote.
“Together, David and Jean (pictured) have been exemplars of selfless service and we have been very lucky, in the Beaches community to have had them both.
“Margie and I offer our deepest condolences to Jean and the wider Hay family.”
