Upgrade on the way for busy Box Hill intersection

The Hills Shire Council and NSW Government are working together to progress an upgrade to one of Box Hill’s busiest intersections.

Transport for NSW (TfNSW) has acquired the final parcel of land at 336 Annangrove Road needed to deliver the upgrade of the Annangrove Road, Withers Road and The Water Lane intersection.

Mayor, Michelle Byrne said the move was a step in the right direction for Box Hill, which will be home to more than 50,000 residents.

“This is a major boost for one of the region’s most important road projects and a really positive step for our community,” Mayor Byrne said.

“Finalising the land acquisition means we can move forward with an upgrade that will improve safety, reduce congestion, and support reliable public transport for decades to come.

“I would like to thank the Minister for Roads Jenny Aitchison MP for her enthusiasm to find a solution for the thousands of residents that travel through this intersection each day.

“I would also like to thank Mark Hodges MP, who set up a meeting with the Minister to discuss this vital project.”

Minister for Roads, Jenny Aitchison said the Box Hill upgrade was part of the Government’s wider plan to improve Western Sydney’s road network.

“We’re delivering the road upgrades Western Sydney has been waiting for,” Minister Aitchison said.

“For too long, this part of Western Sydney has been dealing with congestion, long commutes and safety risks on the roads.

“This upgrade in Box Hill is exactly what’s needed, practical improvements that will make everyday travel safer, easier and more reliable.

“The Minns Labor Government is investing $5.5 billion over four years to upgrade Western Sydney roads – tackling key pressure points, supporting major housing growth and building a network that is safer, more reliable and better integrated with public transport for the future.”

The land acquisition is funded from the Bus Priority Infrastructure Program, a rolling program that delivers infrastructure improvements to address the reliability and efficiency of bus services in Greater Sydney.

With the NSW Government transferring ownership of the land at no cost to Council, the project can now progress into the construction phase. Works on Annangrove Road will see the corridor widened to four lanes between Windsor Road and Edwards Road, significantly improving traffic flow during peak periods. The new intersection layout includes:

  • Two lanes in each direction on all approaches
  • Dual right turn lanes on Annangrove Road
  • Dedicated right turn lanes for Withers Road and The Water Lane
  • Dedicated left turn lanes for all approaches
  • Bus lanes to improve public transport reliability

This project is jointly funded by developer contributions Council has collected, Special Infrastructure Contributions the NSW Government has collected and other TfNSW funding.

The project is now out for public tender to seek a suitably qualified and experienced construction contractor with construction anticipated to begin later this year.
