Townsville City Council is set to host a briefing for contractors, suppliers and consultants on the upcoming duplication of the pipeline between the Ross River Dam and the Douglas Water Treatment plant.
The web-based briefing will be held on 15 September, with those interested in attending encouraged to register using this link.
Townsville Water and Waste committee chairperson, Russ Cook said Council encouraged local contractors, suppliers and consultants to familiarise themselves with the project and get involved.
“Industry briefings are a great opportunity for local industry to engage with Council, understand the finer details of projects to local businesses and can gain confidence and tender for Council work who may not have in the past,” Cr Cook said.
“The on-time and on-budget delivery of the first stage of the Haughton Pipeline project demonstrated that local companies could successfully deliver challenging water projects.
“I am committed to ensuring that we continue to use local companies and workers as much as possible, so this project delivers jobs and economic growth to our community, as well as enhanced water security.”
The duplication of the pipeline is a key part of Council’s capital investment.
“Continuing our strong focus on Townsville’s water security as planned in Council’s Integrated water strategy, Council will invest $177 million in water infrastructure and services this financial year,” Cr Cook said.
“This includes funding to duplicate the pipeline which supplies raw water from the Ross River Dam to the Douglas Water Treatment Plant.
“Currently, around 85 percent of Townsville’s water supply is derived from the 9km, 1220mm diameter concrete pipeline between the dam and the treatment plant.
“The duplication of this pipeline will provide redundancy to the existing pipeline thereby enhancing Townsville’s water security.”
The cost of the duplication is currently estimated to be around $45 million.
The existing pipeline runs adjacent to Riverway Drive and crosses Ross River just prior to the treatment plant. It experienced an unexpected failure in December resulting in a temporary disruption to water supply.
The duplicate pipeline will cross Ross River closer to the dam and run parallel to the river through the Department of Defence’s Mount Stuart Training Area before connecting to the Douglas Water Treatment Plant.
A call for tenders for suitably qualified contractors, suppliers and consultants to undertake the project will be issued on 25 September.
